Remove PNG transparency for App Store images

Updated

The specifications say header and search result images can't include alpha channels or transparencies. The rule covers the alpha channel itself, not just visibly transparent pixels, and many design tools add one to PNG exports by default.

The fix is to export a flattened image without alpha. JPG never has transparency, so exporting as JPG also works for the header and search results; the universal asset must be PNG.

Preview on Mac

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Choose File > Export.
  3. Pick PNG as the format and uncheck Alpha.
  4. Save.

Photoshop

  1. Fill the bottom layer with a solid color so nothing is transparent.
  2. Choose Layer > Flatten Image.
  3. Export as PNG or JPG. With a flattened image there's no transparency to save.

Figma

  1. Give the exported frame a solid fill (not transparent).
  2. Export as JPG, or as PNG from a frame with a solid fill.

Command line

With ImageMagick: magick input.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off output.png

Questions

My image has no transparent pixels. Do I still need to do this?
If the file still has an alpha channel, yes. Re-export without alpha to be safe.
Do storeheader exports have alpha?
No. storeheader exports flattened RGB images with no alpha channel.
